India Sleep Report 2026 — Volume 2 | Reincarn
ORIGINAL RESEARCH Volume 2 · August 2026

India doesn't have a sleep problem.
It has a recovery problem.

707 Indian adults surveyed on sleep duration, wake quality, bedtime behaviour, and what they have tried. The data is more surprising than the headline.

Wake quality

Q: When you wake up, how do you usually feel? — 707 responses

Only 1 in 4 Indian adults wakes up feeling fresh and alert. The majority land somewhere between sluggish and wired-but-exhausted. This is the gap between sleep and recovery: people are sleeping, but the sleep isn't doing what sleep is supposed to do.

73.6% of Indian adults do not wake up fresh and alert. Not because they don't sleep — most sleep 6 to 7 hours — but because duration and depth are different variables.

Sleep duration

Q: How many hours do you actually sleep on a normal night? — 707 responses

73.1% of respondents sleep under 7 hours — but the most common bracket is 6 to 7 hours, which many adults consider adequate. The insight is not that India is sleep-deprived in the obvious sense. The insight is that 6 to 7 hours of poor-quality sleep produces the same outcomes as insufficient sleep.

Bedtime behaviour

Q: Right before bed, you are usually… — 569 responses · Q: At bedtime, what is your mind doing? — 707 responses

56.8% of respondents who answered this question are scrolling their phones right before sleep. Only 8.6% have a structured wind-down routine. The consequence shows up in the next question: 71.1% are not mentally calm when they try to sleep — they are planning tomorrow, replaying today, or lying wide awake.

71.1% of Indian adults are not mentally disengaged when they go to bed. The dominant mode is forward-planning: 36.1% fall asleep already running through tomorrow's agenda. This is an activated nervous system problem, not a melatonin deficiency.

What frustrates people most

Q: What frustrates you MOST about your sleep? — 707 responses

The distribution of frustrations is revealing. The top complaint — "I sleep enough but still feel tired" (25.0%) — is the same unrestorative sleep problem the duration data describes. The second — "Can't switch off my mind" (25.3%) — is the bedtime activation problem. Together, these two account for half of all complaints.

27.4% said their sleep is fine. Notably, this group largely overlaps with respondents who still don't wake up fresh — meaning the problem is undercognised. People have adapted to running at reduced capacity.

What Indian adults have tried for sleep

Q: What have you tried for better sleep? — 707 responses

76.5% of Indian adults have tried nothing for their sleep. Not melatonin. Not ashwagandha. Not meditation. Nothing. The sleep supplement market in India is not a saturated market. It is a market that has barely started.

What people actually want

Q: If your sleep were fixed, what would your ideal morning look like? — 707 responses

When asked what a fixed morning looks like, 35.6% said "wake before the alarm." 25.3% want to be sharp from hour one. Only 2.4% mentioned skipping coffee — mornings are not about caffeine dependency, they are about the feeling of being ready without prompting.

Methodology

Survey conducted via Typeform, collected August 2026. Total respondents: 707. All questions were mandatory except Q3 (pre-bed activity), which received 569 responses. No personally identifiable information was collected. Respondents self-selected via Reincarn owned channels and social distribution. The sample skews toward digitally active Indian adults aged 18-44 (78.1% of respondents) and should not be extrapolated to represent the full Indian population.

This is Volume 2 of the Reincarn Annual Sleep Survey series. Volume 1 (2026, n=152) established baseline findings. Volume 2 expands the sample to 707 respondents with an identical question structure to enable longitudinal comparison.
