Do Blue Light Glasses and Night Mode Actually Protect Your Sleep?

The honest answer disappoints the marketing. A Cochrane review found insufficient evidence that blue-light-filtering glasses improve sleep, and a controlled study found that phone Night Shift mode did not improve sleep at all. The reason is simple: blue light is only one of the ways screens harm sleep. The psychological engagement of scrolling and the resulting deep-sleep deficit are not fixed by filtering light. Filters and glasses are not harmful and may marginally help, but they are not a solution. What works is reducing screen use and engagement before bed, and rebuilding deep sleep directly.
Do blue light glasses improve sleep?
The evidence is weak. A 2023 Cochrane review of blue-light-filtering spectacle lenses found insufficient, low-certainty evidence that they improve sleep or reduce eye strain, and noted that no included studies even measured melatonin.1 So while blue-light glasses are heavily marketed for sleep, the research does not back the claim. They are not dangerous, but they are not a reliable fix.
Does phone Night Shift / night mode help?
Apparently not. In a controlled study, researchers compared people who used their phone at night with Night Shift on, with it off, and people who did not use a phone before bed. Across the whole sample there were no differences in sleep.2 The researchers concluded that it is not blue light alone that disrupts sleep, and that the psychological engagement of texting, scrolling and posting matters too.
Why filtering light is not enough
This fits the bigger picture. Screens harm sleep through three pathways: melatonin suppression, raised alertness, and engagement. Filters and glasses only touch the first, and even there the evidence is shaky. So they leave most of the damage untouched. That is why people who diligently use night mode still wake up groggy, the deep-sleep deficit is still there.
