What about the tryptophan in milk?
Milk does contain tryptophan, but far too little to sedate you; research uses gram-level doses that a glass of milk cannot match. Tryptophan is an amino acid the body uses to make serotonin and melatonin, and studies show it can shift mood and sleep, but “a 3 g pure Trp load” is needed to meaningfully raise serotonin synthesis (Silber and Schmitt, 2010). So why does warm milk feel like it works?
Because warmth, comfort and a consistent ritual genuinely lower arousal, and the body cools after a warm drink, which supports sleep onset.
