What is the difference between them?
Sleeping pills are sedative drugs that force sleep by depressing brain activity; supplements are nutrients or botanicals that support sleep more gently without sedation. Prescription hypnotics such as Z-drugs and benzodiazepines act on the brain's sedative pathways to knock you out. How well do sleeping pills work?
They do improve sleep, but the benefit is often small, and it comes with meaningful risks, especially in older adults. In a meta-analysis of sedative-hypnotics in older people, sleep quality improved with an effect size of only 0.14, and the number-needed-to-treat for improved sleep was 13 (Glass et al., 2005). What are the risks of sleeping pills?
In older adults, adverse cognitive and psychomotor effects are common: cognitive events were nearly five times more likely, and harm was more likely than benefit. The same meta-analysis found adverse cognitive events with an odds ratio of 4.78, nearly five times placebo, and a number-needed-to-harm of just 6, lower than the number-needed-to-treat of 13, meaning harm was more likely than benefit (Glass et al., 2005).
