The core problem: enough sleep, not enough deep sleep

The single most important idea here is that sleep quantity and sleep depth are different things. You can spend seven or eight hours in bed and still be short on deep, slow-wave sleep, the stage that actually restores you. Why the usual fixes fall short

Melatonin

The instinct is: screens lower my melatonin, so I will take melatonin. But melatonin is a timing signal, and on polysomnography it does not meaningfully increase deep sleep.5 It can shift when you fall asleep while doing little for the deep-sleep deficit screens cause.

Blue light glasses

A 2023 Cochrane review found insufficient, low-certainty evidence that blue-light-filtering glasses improve sleep, with no studies even measuring melatonin.6 They are not harmful, but they are not a fix.
