What is a Sleep Performance Supplement? And Why India Needs One.

QUICK ANSWER
A sleep performance supplement targets deep sleep architecture and next-day recovery, which is fundamentally different from sleep onset aids that only help you fall asleep faster. India needs this category because its large screen-user population has elevated evening cortisol and suppressed night-time melatonin, creating a deep sleep deficit that melatonin products are not designed to address.
India's first Sleep Performance Supplement, explained: why melatonin does not fix deep sleep, what Maizinol UP165 actually does, and why most Indian screen users have a sleep performance deficit rather than a sleep problem.

You Slept 7 Hours. Why Does Your Brain Feel Like It Didn't?
The alarm goes off. Your hand finds the phone before your eyes are open, not because you want to, just because that is the reflex now. You lie there for a minute, running a background process that sounds like: okay, what do I have today? It takes effort to even ask. The coffee is not optional. It is the ignition sequence.
And the strangest part is that you slept. You went to bed. You had what most people would call a normal night, seven hours, maybe close to eight. And you woke up at 60 percent.
This is not a sleep problem. You do not have insomnia and you do not need a prescription. What you have is a sleep performance deficit, and it is caused by a gap in a specific stage of sleep that most Indian supplements ignore. That gap is what REINCARN Night Reboot, India's first Sleep Performance Supplement, was built to close.
Why Most Indian Sleep Supplements Are Built for the Wrong Person
There are two distinct populations when it comes to sleep in India.
Population 1: people who cannot sleep. This is roughly 10 to 15 percent of adults. They have sleep onset problems: they lie awake, some have diagnosed insomnia, and they need intervention at the level of sleep initiation. Melatonin, antihistamines and sedatives are all built for Population 1.
Population 2: people who sleep but do not recover. In our April 2026 survey of Indian screen users (n=152), 72 percent said they do not wake up feeling rested despite sleeping. They complete 6 to 8 hours. The quantity is there; the quality is not. They have a sleep performance deficit.
Most sleep supplements sold in India are built for Population 1, the minority who cannot fall asleep. The larger group, who sleep but wake up unrestored, has been left underserved.
Melatonin, the dominant ingredient in Indian sleep supplements, is a circadian signalling hormone. Its job is to tell your brain it is night, begin sleep onset. A 2004 Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality review1 examined whether melatonin increased slow-wave (deep) sleep and found no significant effect on slow-wave sleep. A later meta-analysis2 put the sleep-onset benefit at roughly 7 minutes.
Population 2 takes melatonin, falls asleep fine, and wakes up at 60 percent anyway, because melatonin never touched the problem.
What Sleep Performance Actually Means
Sleep performance is not about falling asleep. Falling asleep is the entrance. Sleep performance is what happens inside.
Your sleep architecture is made up of cycles, typically 4 to 5 per night, each around 90 minutes. Within each cycle are stages: N1 (light), N2 (transition), N3 (deep), and REM. The stage that most determines whether you wake up functional is N3, slow-wave sleep, also called deep sleep. This is where much of the body's physical repair happens. Read more on what deep sleep is and why it matters more than total hours.
Healthy adults need roughly 90 to 120 minutes of N3 per night. Many screen-heavy adults get less, and that shortfall sits in the single stage that runs most of the body's overnight restoration.
Here is what happens in N3, and what it maps to in the morning.
1. Glymphatic clearance. The brain's waste-clearance system is most active during deep sleep, clearing metabolic debris built up across a day of thinking (Xie et al., 20133). Too little N3 can leave you foggy in the morning.
2. Cortisol reset. Deep sleep supports the reset of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Insufficient N3 is associated with a less complete overnight cortisol reset, which can read as low patience and reactive mood before the day has even started.
3. Growth hormone release. A large share of daily growth hormone is secreted during deep sleep, which is the body's tissue-repair window.
4. Memory consolidation. The transfer from short-term to long-term memory is supported by deep sleep. Study material read at midnight consolidates poorly on too little N3, which can feel like a memory problem when it is really a sleep problem.
The gap between too little N3 and enough N3 is a large part of the gap between waking at 60 percent and waking at 100 percent. Closing that gap is what a sleep performance supplement is for.
Why Melatonin Is Not a Sleep Performance Supplement
What melatonin does, and does not do
Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland in response to darkness. Its function is circadian phase shifting: it signals that night has arrived. It is genuinely useful for jet lag, shift work and some circadian rhythm disorders. What the evidence does not support is a meaningful increase in deep sleep. If you are not a shift worker or a jet-lagged traveller, melatonin gives you a slightly earlier sleep onset and little else, and Population 2's problem begins after sleep onset.
The dose problem
Physiological circadian effects occur at very low doses of melatonin, in the region of 0.1 to 0.3mg. Many Indian products contain 5 to 10mg, which is many times that. There is little clinical justification for such doses in a non-clinical population, and higher intakes are one reason some users worry about reliance. In our April 2026 survey (n=152), 31 percent named dependency as their main concern about sleep supplements. For the evidence on this, see the side effects of long-term melatonin use.
The category is built on the wrong mechanism
Sleep initiation and sleep performance are different processes. Initiation is a circadian and neurochemical event. Deep sleep depth and duration are governed by a separate set of mechanisms: GABA-A receptor activity, thermoregulation, cortisol axis function, and the amplitude of delta-wave oscillations. Giving someone melatonin to improve sleep performance is like handing them a parking pass when the car has no engine. The pass gets you into the lot; it does nothing for what happens after.
What Is a Sleep Performance Supplement? A Definition.
We use this category because it does not otherwise exist in India. To qualify, a sleep performance supplement should meet all of the following.
- It targets N3 deep sleep specifically, not just sleep onset.
- It addresses elevated evening cortisol, the root issue for screen users, whose late-night screen exposure suppresses melatonin and elevates cortisol.
- It is hormone-free. It should support the body's own melatonin synthesis rather than replace or suppress it.
- Its key ingredient has objective clinical evidence, measured with polysomnography or EEG rather than questionnaires alone.
- It discloses full doses. No proprietary blends. Every ingredient and milligram on the label.
- It aims at measurable morning outcomes, not just a vague sense of better sleep.
REINCARN Night Reboot was designed against all six. The ingredient that anchors it is Maizinol UP165.
Maizinol UP165: The Anchor Ingredient
Maizinol is a standardised extract of Zea mays (corn) leaf, developed by Unigen Inc. As far as we are aware, REINCARN Night Reboot is the first Indian supplement to use it.
Why Maizinol is different
Most sleep ingredients either replace a hormone (melatonin), sedate the nervous system (antihistamines, some herbals), or relax muscles. Maizinol works differently: rather than adding melatonin, it supports the body's own melatonin synthesis pathway, and its active compound binds the MT2 receptor subtype associated with deep NREM sleep. Your body still makes its own melatonin, at a physiological, timed level, rather than receiving a large external dose.
The clinical evidence
Maizinol UP165 has been studied in two independent clinical trials, neither funded by REINCARN, using objective sleep measurement.
Talbott et al. (2023)4, a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, tested 250 and 500mg and reported improvements in sleep quality and mood. Doma et al. (2026)5, a triple-blind randomised controlled trial conducted by KGK Science (Canada) in 80 participants over 28 nights, used actigraphy with EEG-based monitoring and reported improvements in sleep architecture at 500mg.
REINCARN Night Reboot contains 250mg of Maizinol UP165 per sachet, the dose used in the Talbott trial. The Doma trial tested 500mg, which is two sachets. We cite both because together they establish the ingredient's mechanism and safety, and we do not claim the 500mg results at our single-sachet dose.
How Maizinol compares to melatonin, by mechanism
| Parameter | Maizinol UP165 | Melatonin |
|---|---|---|
| Primary target | Deep sleep architecture (N3) | Timing of sleep onset |
| Mechanism | Supports the body's own melatonin synthesis; MT2 receptor activity | Adds an exogenous hormone |
| Objective sleep measurement | Studied with polysomnography and EEG4,5 | No significant slow-wave effect1 |
| Dependency concern | Non-hormonal, no added hormone | High doses may suppress the pineal gland |
| Jet lag / circadian reset | Not its purpose | Genuinely useful |
For everything that determines whether you wake up recovered, Maizinol targets the right mechanism. The one thing melatonin does better is jet lag and circadian phase-shifting, because that is its biological job. This is why REINCARN Night Reboot is melatonin-free by design, not as a marketing angle. See melatonin vs melatonin-free for deep sleep.
The Full Stack: Why 7 Ingredients, Not 1
Maizinol UP165 is the anchor, but sleep performance is a multi-pathway problem, so REINCARN Night Reboot addresses thermoregulation, neurotransmitter balance, and the cortisol axis together. Here is the complete, fully disclosed formula.
Glycine, 3,000mg
Glycine supports the drop in core body temperature that helps trigger deep sleep entry. Bannai et al. (2012)6 reported improved next-morning alertness with 3g glycine before bed.
Magnesium Bisglycinate, 300mg
Magnesium supports GABA-A receptor function, the body's main calming pathway, and is involved in cortisol modulation and sleep efficiency7. Bisglycinate is a well-absorbed chelated form, unlike oxide, which is poorly absorbed. See why chelated magnesium is the form that works.
L-Theanine, 200mg
L-Theanine promotes alpha-wave activity, the calm, non-anxious state that precedes sleep onset (Nobre et al., 20088). For anyone going from screen to bed, it is the transition ingredient.
Maizinol UP165, 250mg
The deep-sleep anchor described above, and as far as we are aware the first use of this ingredient in India.
Tagara (Valeriana wallichii), 300mg
Tagara is the Indian relative of valerian. Its active compounds act on GABA-A receptors to reduce neuronal excitability, the state needed for deep sleep entry (Bent et al., 20069). See Tagara vs valerian root.
KSM-66 Ashwagandha, 300mg
KSM-66 is a well-studied full-spectrum ashwagandha root extract. As an adaptogen, it helps lower elevated evening cortisol, the stress signal that keeps the nervous system wired and works against deep sleep entry (Chandrasekhar et al., 201210). In this formula it is the stress reset, not a sleep-onset agent.
Vitamin B6, 2mg
B6 is the cofactor for the tryptophan to serotonin to melatonin synthesis chain. Adequate B6 keeps that pathway from being rate-limited at the cofactor level.
Total actives: 4,352mg per sachet. The Indian category average for sleep-supplement active content is far lower, often in the low hundreds of milligrams. See how to choose a sleep supplement in India.
This Is Not for Everyone. It Is Specifically for You.
REINCARN Night Reboot is not for people who cannot sleep. If you have clinical insomnia, see a doctor. This is for people who sleep and wake up running on empty: the software engineer who codes until 1am and cannot think before the 9am standup, the marketing manager who falls asleep with the phone on her chest and makes worse decisions by Wednesday, the student who re-reads the same material three times because it will not consolidate, and the senior professional who has forgotten what 100 percent feels like. If you recognise yourself, this was built for you.
India's First Sleep Performance Supplement: What That Means
"India's First Sleep Performance Supplement" is a category definition with technical criteria, not just a brand line: an ingredient with objective deep-sleep evidence, a hormone-free mechanism, cortisol-axis activity, and full dose disclosure. As far as we are aware, no other Indian supplement currently uses Maizinol UP165 or an equivalent ingredient with comparable objective deep-sleep data.
This matters beyond positioning. As melatonin becomes more widely available, the market will fill with melatonin products competing on price and flavour for Population 1. Population 2, the larger group who sleep and wake unrestored, will still be underserved. A melatonin-free deep-sleep approach is the position that cannot simply be commoditised with a cheaper hormone.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a sleep performance supplement?
A sleep performance supplement is designed to improve what happens during sleep, specifically the quality and duration of N3 deep sleep, rather than simply helping you fall asleep. Unlike traditional sleep aids that target onset, it addresses recovery: cortisol reset, glymphatic clearance, growth hormone release and memory consolidation. India's first is REINCARN Night Reboot.
How is REINCARN Night Reboot different from melatonin supplements?
Melatonin mainly shortens the time to fall asleep and has no significant effect on deep sleep1,2. REINCARN Night Reboot contains no melatonin. Its anchor ingredient, Maizinol UP165, supports the body's own melatonin synthesis and targets deep sleep, without adding a hormone.
What is Maizinol and why is it notable in India?
Maizinol UP165 is a standardised corn-leaf extract developed by Unigen Inc., studied in two independent clinical trials using objective sleep measurement (Talbott 2023; Doma 2026). As far as we are aware, REINCARN Night Reboot is the first Indian supplement to use it.
Is REINCARN Night Reboot safe for daily use?
It is hormone-free and non-sedative, with all seven ingredients working through physiological mechanisms and disclosed at full dose (4,352mg total). It is for adults 18 and over. It is not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as it contains KSM-66 Ashwagandha and Tagara, which are not recommended in those situations. If you take thyroid, sedative or immunosuppressant medication, consult your doctor first.
What can I expect in 7 nights?
Seven nights is a reasonable evaluation window. Many people report a difference in morning clarity and mood within the first several nights, though individual results vary with screen use, sleep duration and baseline deep sleep. This is general information, not a guarantee of results.
